A Happy New Year to all!  The office of President continues to run itself for which, I take no credit.  The organization of our Association is such that in the absence of a catastrophe, others in the organization keep it running so smoothly that the President’s job is a cakewalk.

As we approach our next reunion, the Reunion Committee is hurrying and scurrying to wrap up all the loose ends and the rest of us eagerly anticipate another of the series of reunions that just seem to get better and better.

Our Scholarship Committee, chaired by Mike Gilroy, is overseeing what appears to be a smooth transition of our funds and responsibility, over to the AMS.  We have a potential problem this spring with the editing and publication of the Aerograph in that USPS will likely close the bulk mail distribution center in Abilene.  This would mean that our current Editor, Charlie Jordan will be looking for a replacement as distribution of the Aerograph requires a distribution center in proximity to the Editor.  The next nearest distribution center to Charlie would be many hours of driving time from his residence in Abilene.  We would all hate to lose the terrific Editor that we have but be prepared in case the anticipated closing of the Abilene mail distribution center happens.

On October 13th, the U.S. Navy celebrated its 236th birthday and continues to be the nation’s first response around the world in times of crises.  I’m sure that you all are as proud to have served in this great institution as I am.  As I reported in the August Aerograph, the association continues to run smoothly with little effort from the President.  Through the efforts of the associations Officers (especially the Secretary/Treasurer, Aerograph Editor, Webmasters, Finance Chairman and Reunion Committee), any problems that have surfaced have essentially been resolved prior to any necessary involvement by me.  Just the way I like it!

The Colorado Springs Reunion for next Spring, continues to come together.  More information in this Aerograph issue and it is definitely not too soon to get your reservations in and volunteer to help at the reunion.  It has been brought to my attention that some of our long standing members appear to have allowed their dues to lapse.  When dues lapse, Aerograph mailings (snail mail or Email) cease.  Also, access to the Aerograph via the NWSA Website will be cut off.  Double check to be sure that you are not one with lapsed dues.  With that, I wish everyone happy holidays, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

For those who attended Reunion #37 in Virginia Beach, this goes without saying but the Hampton Roads Chapter provided an outstanding reunion under very trying circumstances.  The Reunion Committee Chairman, Marty Nemcosky, suffered a stroke and passed away before a lot of the final reunion arrangements were complete.  Marty had been very much dedicated to putting on a reunion to remember and through the efforts of his shipmates and their spouse’s, it turned out to be just that.  Congratulations to all those who put out such effort to see Marty’s dream to its fruition.

Everyone that I asked has accepted my request to fill appointed positions for this year.  (See page 2 for this year’s slate).  Although it is early in my tenure as President, all seems to be going smoothly and the organization is running itself with the indispensable help of our great Secretary/Treasurer, Libby O’Brien.  How did we ever get along without her?

The 2012 Reunion Committee Chairman, Earl Kerr, has been keeping me informed of preparations and progress for Reunion #38 in Colorado Springs.  We are still about 9 months out but everything appears to be shaping up for one more in a string of great reunions.  Alan Davis is busy already preparing for Reunion #39 in Las Vegas.  As most of you know, these next two reunions are being held in areas that have no local Chapter for support and individuals are doing all the grunt work, mainly by remote control. I urge everyone to contact the Reunion Chairmen to volunteer any support that you can and be sure to sign up to assist at registration and in monitoring the hospitality rooms.

If nothing more urgent happens than what already has (and I hope it doesn’t), my future Presidents Reports will be just as brief as this one.  Have a good summer ya’ll.

We all lost a dear friend and shipmate on March 22, 2011, when God opened the pearly gates and welcomed CDR Martin (Marty) Nemcosky on his final cruise into everlasting life.  I know he will be missed by all who knew him.  Carol and I are looking forward to Reunion #37 in Virginia Beach where there will be a celebration of Marty’s life – not a mourning of his death.

Speaking of Reunion #37, I found out that RADM White will be in Tampa during that time and will be represented by one of the two captains in the Norfolk area.  I also found out that both of the Sailors of the Year will be attending the reunion. Let’s give AG1 (AW) Gary Hibbs (Shore) and AG1 (EXW) Travis Lawson (Sea) a NWSA welcome

I’m sorry to announce that AGCS Marty Martinez has had to resign from the Scholarship Committee.  Marty has spent his life in education since retiring from the navy, and has been an integral part of the Scholarship Committee for the last two years.  His expertise will be missed.  Having said that, we will need for someone to step up and volunteer to serve on the Scholarship Committee.  Please email me and/or see me at the reunion.  If you receive this issue of The Aerograph after 30 April, you can contact our incoming President Joe McKinzie.

While on the subject of scholarships, there will be discussion at the reunion concerning the transfer of our scholarship program to the American Meteorological Society.  This would entail transferring our scholarship funds to the AMS and they would reward two $5,000.00 scholarships a year in disciplines that we now use to reward scholarships.  The AMS would keep us apprised of their actions when awarding scholarships.  Naturally, there is too much information to include in this article.  If you have a question you may contact the Scholarship Committee Chair Mike Gilroy.  If you have an opinion on this transfer of our scholarship program you can email/call me or after 30 April email/call our new President Joe McKinzie.

NWSA has been a busy organization this year.  The Hampton Roads Chapter has been busy preparing for Reunion #37, and a group chaired by Earl Kerr has been hard at work preparing for Reunion #38 in Colorado Springs – read a little about it in this issue.  The Scholarship Committee has been exploring different aspects of our scholarship program and how to enhance it through increasing donations and also reaching out to different universities and high schools looking for eligible scholarship recipients.  The committee has been making giant strides in improving our scholarship program.

We are winding down another year.  A lot goes on between reunions and I want to thank our Executive Council for working with me to see that the NWSA operated effectively until the first Executive Board meeting in Virginia Beach.

Now, I want to thank you for the honor and pleasure of being your president for the past twelve months.

Bill Bowers, President
