The Naval Weather Service Association (NWSA) was formed
in 1975, when a group of Navy weather people got together at NAS Lakehurst
for the first convention. The idea for an NWSA may have had its origin in
Norfolk in 1974 by a group of senior Petty Officers and Chiefs. We've held
annual reunions all over the USA, but our 'home port' is Pensacola, since
that's where Aerology got its start shortly after WW1 ended.
See the latest from our Secretary / Treasurer,
Jim Stone.
New members not on active duty are asked to pay $10.00
registration plus $20.00 for one year dues. Individuals whose dues expired
more than one year ago are also asked to pay $10.00 registration. New Life
Members who are currently members of NWSA pay only $175.00 – those who
are not current members are also asked to include $10.00 registration.
Gift memberships are only $10.00.
Our membership is composed of active and retired
Aerographers Mates, Aerologists, Meteorologists, Oceanographers, and
civilians with backgrounds or interests in our field. While the majority
of our members are Navy, we have members from all branches of the service.
We maintain regional
chapters of the NWSA that are scattered around the USA
NWSA Constitution and Bylaws
Why an NWSA?
Our goal is to perpetuate the friendships and relationships between people
who have enjoyed working in NAVY weather and oceanography. To accomplish
this, we maintain the BELLINGER LIST of addresses--named for Lloyd B
Bellinger. Who started it in the 1960s--almost 3,000 names and
growing-updated annually and redistributed to the NWSA members during
November. This is all accomplished with volunteer labor!
Members also receive THE AEROGRAPH
newsletter quarterly
(normally FEB, MAY, JUL, & NOV). Here we find chapter news and other
pertinent people chatter. Admittedly, it's difficult to keep up with
people who seem to be continuously moving!
Join the NWSA and Receive entire
Newsletter!
For several years, NWSA worked toward an Aerology
Exhibit to be mounted in the superb National Museum of Naval Aviation
which is located on Naval Air Station, Pensacola. This exhibit was
dedicated in May 1995. And yes, there is a Scholarship
Program with annual awards from donated funds. NWSA is non-profit, per
IRS definition. All of these efforts are coordinated with the Commander,
Naval Meteorology and Oceanographic Command, and are treated valuable
adjuncts to command objectives worldwide. We think that is important.
ANNUAL
REUNIONS! These events bring into focus all of the above--that's the name of our
game. If you've never attended one, then you have missed an outstanding
opportunity to meet, greet and visit with your old shipmates and friends
from the "old days of Naval Aerology" . . plus those members of
present day Meteorology and Oceanography Command where the 'weather
guessin' still goes on but now includes some of the highest
technologically sophisticated work.
COME ON
AND JOIN A GREAT GROUP!
