Home of the "Weather
Guesser's"
Aerog3/c Samuel H. P. Stinson went to the Pacific Fleet from Lakehurst and was assigned to the ComBatFor Pacific Fleet staff Aerology Unit in USS CALIFORNIA (BB-44). She was affectionately know as "The Prune Barge." Wm "Pappy" Green was CAerog but I've forgotten who was Aerological Officer. On the morning of 7th Dec 1941 Sam was standing near the quarterdeck observing colors when the crap hit the fan. After he was returned to duty from NavHosp Pearl he was captured by the "spooks," about which we have all read historical accounts, Fleet Radio Unit Pacific in Pearl. We were just learning to use weather info as part of the SIGINT effort. Sam went to sea in various old battle wagons that were still seaworthy, as part of SIGINT teams. CAerog Robt Livingston was more or less in charge of the weather people. Anne Roane Drummond of PotChap was then Aerog3/c and later 2/c in FRUPAC 1942-44. Sam married his wife Ruth, who was an AerM2c. She died seven or eight years ago, leaving Sam in the care of daughter Patricia. Our Class 20 roster is getting a bit thin. Cheers, Don Cruse
