A commemorative flag designed by the grieving father of a Virginia Beach soldier killed in Iraq is on its way toward official recognition by the state of Virginia. George Lutz designed the
Honor and Remember Flag in honor of his son Tony, who was shot dead by a sniper in Fallujah in 2005 shortly after his 25th birthday. Lutz hopes the flag -- a red-and-white field with a gold star and red flame -- will become a national symbol to honor all troops killed while in military service. A resolution introduced by Del. John Cosgrove, R-Chesapeake, designates the flag as Virginia's "emblem of service and sacrifice" by the estimated 1.6 million fallen service members throughout American history. The measure, approved unanimously by the House Rules Committee on Tuesday, advances to the full House. Cosgrove told the committee the purpose of the flag is to remind Americans that "freedom is not free and comes at a terrible price."
