DONALD NATHAN BROWN, Navy Meteorologist
Donald Nathan Brown, 75, a Navy meteorologist and oceanographer, died July 9 at his home in Richmond. He had Parkinson's disease.

Captain Brown served in the Navy for more than 28 years. He was based primarily at the Navy Annex, the Navy Yard and the Pentagon, with several shipboard tours, including one 1963 expedition to locate a sunken nuclear submarine, the USS THRESHER, off the coast of Boston.

He was born in Reading PA and graduated from Oregon State University. He earned a master's degree in meteorology and oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA in 1960.

After his retirement in 1979, Captain Brown worked for Science Applications International Corp. as a senior science consultant to NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena CA.

He loved running, tennis, books and teaching and tutored homebound students in math and science for Fairfax County Public Schools. He moved to Richmond in December.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty L. Brown of Richmond; two children, Nathan Brown of Henderson, NV, Colleen Brown Erskine of Annandale, VA; two step-children, David Dow of LeGrande, OR and Lorry Dow Yoder of Arlington, VA; and eight grandchildren.

[Non-editorial comments: When I first met Don Brown about 1971 he was in the Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy, located in Hoffman Building #2 in Alexandria VA. RADM Snyder USN was the Oceanographer of the Navy who was responsible for shifting the former Naval Weather Service Command headquarters and the Naval Oceanographic Office to Stennis Space Center in Bay St. Louis MS. Don Brown was a member of Potomac Regional Chapter (NWSA) until his health began failing and he relocated for a while to Nevada.  Besides Parkinson's he suffered from macular degeneration.
