2010-2011 Scholarship information
NEWS FROM THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE Source: Aerograph, February, 2010 The Committee has been placing some effort in reaching out
directly to Universities with proven programs in Meteorology and
Oceanography. We have made
contact with department undergraduate advisers, Professors and Chairs. We
are confident we will see some quality applications from students with
declared majors. Our focus on
this pool of students has been motivated by increasing the probability of
successful completion of degrees. It
is very difficult to predict how well High School Seniors will perform
once they hit the more rigorous demand of college mathematics, etc. Based
on some feedback from a Professor at the We have already been fielding some questions for several
university students. We will
continue to welcome any high school applicants into the review process. On a sad note, one of our successful applicants from last
year has experienced some serious medical issues and notified the
association that she would not be attending school as planned. We
have placed her award in suspense until after the 2010/11 process is
complete so that she can receive her award without reapplying. We
hope she will recover soon and have encouraged her to reapply in the
future in she desires to do so in 2011/2012. Many thanks to Ed Frandle and Marty Martinez.
They are really helping make the committee functional. We are seeking a point of contact from each chapter to help
answer basic questions from potential applicants. It's
not sponsorship, just someone from the same geographic region who can
encourage students to apply. Please
let One final comment DONATE! The
Association needs your ongoing support. The
Scholarship Program is OUR most valuable effort to sustain a meaningful
public presence and service. We
should all be very proud of the program. Please

Committee is energized and gearing up for this year’s applicant cycle!
We need some help from the chapters. 1. We have begun
a more focused marketing strategy at universities with relevant degree
programs and a good pool of undergraduates who are on their way to
achieving a degree in Meteorology, Oceanography and Aerospace Engineering.
In doing so, we hope to increase the probability that our financial
support will likely result in degrees in the above fields.
2. We have new
application forms that will hopefully make it easier for applicants to
complete and submit to the committee. They are available on the web site. 3. We will be
updating the Scholarship Section of the website to help search engines
find us if someone is seeking information on scholarships in Meteorology
or Oceanography. 4. Ed
Frandle continues on the committee and Marty
Martinez has joined as our
newest member. FUNDING We
want to encourage every member to donate something this year.
This is our cornerstone program and sustaining it with annual
donations is critical. Remember
its tax deductable but don’t wait until December! 1. We are
relaxing the role of the sponsor to help streamline the application
process and place greater responsibility for timely and complete
submission from the students. 2. We are asking
that each Chapter identify at least one person who can serve as a point of
contact for students from nearby universities and high schools. The
primary goal is to create some additional resources to help with
committee/student communications. Send the names to : nwsascholarships@navalweather.org 3.
The committee can provide the Chapters with a template
announcement letter for schools they would like to communicate with
regarding the scholarship program.
