Audrey L. “Jake” Bengel
Jr. LCDR USN RET
died on October 31, 2006, after a brief battle with liver cancer in
Burlington. Although a longtime resident of Virginia His career as a meteorologist in the U.S. Navy took him to the West, Gulf and East Coasts, the Philippines and Antarctica, among other places. Jake served in USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42), USS Midway (CVB-41) and CVA-41), USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14), USS Lake Champlain (CVA-39), USS Valley Forge (LPH-8), USS El Dorado (AGC-11), USS Estes (AGC-12), USS Paul Revere (APA-248), USS George Clymer (APA-27), USS Princeton (LPH-5), and USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2). He enjoyed his retirement years traveling and building scale and RC model boats. He was an active member in the Naval Service Weather Association, Elite Fleet of Virginia Beach, Old Antarctica Explorers Association and the Bow Creek Civic League. He will be missed by all who knew him. Jake is survived by his three sons, Butch Bengel (Cedaredge, Col.), David Bengel (Atoka, Tenn.) and Kevin Bengel (Elon, N.C.); five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
